The habits that separate professional installations from expensive failures.

Inspect and clean every connection

### Why Dirty endfaces are the industry's #1 failure cause. One inspection costs 20 seconds; one truck roll costs a day. ### Steps 1. Scope the connector (video microscope, ≥200×). 2. If it fails: one dry click-clean. 3. Re-scope. 4. Still failing: wet-to-dry wipe with fiber solvent. 5. Re-scope until pass. 6. Scope the other side and the adapter with a port stick. 7. Connect immediately and cap nothing that is mated. ### Do Keep caps on unmated ports · use each wipe zone once · log images when the contract requires. ### Don't Never eyeball a possibly-live fiber · never use canned air as cleaning · never touch a cleaned ferrule.

Reference your test set correctly

### Why A wrong reference silently poisons every loss number of the day — including the ones that decide payment. ### Steps 1. Inspect/clean reference cords first. 2. One-cord reference: source→cord→meter, set zero. 3. Add the second cord and a known adapter; verify ≤0.2 dB shift. 4. Test with the same cords, same wavelengths, both directions. 5. Re-check the reference after any drop or every few hours. ### Do Use reference-grade cords · record the method in results · retire cords that fail verification. ### Don't Don't loop a reference through the link under test · don't accept negative loss — re-reference.

Protect bend radius everywhere

### Why Macrobends are invisible in daylight and expensive at 1550/1625 nm. Most appear during tie-wrapping, tray dressing and wall-box stuffing. ### Steps 1. Know the numbers: 20× OD dynamic, 10× static, 30 mm in trays, per-datasheet for G.657 drops. 2. Use radius guides, bend limiters and correctly sized slack spools. 3. Hand-tighten ties to a loose slide fit — or use hook-and-loop indoors. 4. After dressing, sweep at the longest service wavelength to catch new bends. ### Do Route drops with gentle sweeps · leave door-side service loops · photograph finished trays. ### Don't No staples on drops · no 90° corners without guides · never hang cable weight on a connector.

Fusion splice like a professional

### Why The cleave makes the splice. Machines forgive nothing they cannot align. ### Steps 1. Strip 30–40 mm coating. 2. Clean bare glass with ≥99% IPA, one direction, new wipe. 3. Cleave ≤1–2°; inspect the machine's cleave image. 4. Fuse; read the loss estimate. 5. >0.10 dB? Re-cleave and redo — always. 6. Center and shrink the sleeve; lay at ≥30 mm radius. ### Do Arc-calibrate daily and on environment change · log electrode counts · keep V-grooves spotless. ### Don't Don't blow on fibers · don't reuse wipes · don't "accept" a bad estimate to save minutes — the OTDR will find it later at your cost.

Always shoot OTDR with launch and receive fibers

### Why Without them, the first and last connectors — the most failure-prone parts — sit inside dead zones and are never measured. ### Steps 1. Match launch/receive fiber type and connectors to the link. 2. Length ≥ dead zone at your pulse (typ. 150–500 m access, 1–2 km long-haul). 3. Shoot both wavelengths, both directions. 4. Set group index from the cable sheet. 5. Save with metadata and a disciplined file name. ### Do Analyze the far connector via the receive fiber · average bidirectional splice values · keep one thresholds template per project. ### Don't Don't test through a dirty launch cord · don't trust distances with a guessed index · don't average away a real failure.

Label now, not later

### Why Unlabeled plant works on day one and fails unfindably in year three. Records decay the moment work outruns them. ### Steps 1. Adopt the project ID scheme before the first pull. 2. Machine-print durable labels; apply at both ends and every appearance. 3. Fill the splice matrix as each tray closes — not from memory at day's end. 4. Update port maps with every jumper move. 5. Close every work order with a documentation step. ### Do Photograph closures before sealing · export test files into the record set · keep one master, versioned. ### Don't No handwritten "temporary" labels that live forever · no closing tickets with records pending · no private spreadsheets that leave with the technician.

Respect APC/UPC discipline

### Why One APC↔UPC mating creates a large air gap, wrecks return loss, and can permanently damage both ferrules — and green-to-blue is the easiest mistake on a rushed site. ### Steps 1. Standardize: PON/ODN = APC (green) everywhere; equipment rooms follow the transceiver spec (usually UPC). 2. Stock and stage cords by color per zone. 3. Verify color before every mating. 4. Where both exist, install hybrid cords made for the purpose — never force. ### Do Mark panels with the required polish · train every newcomer on day one · scope after any suspected mismatch. ### Don't Never mate green to blue · never "just once for testing" · never re-polish by hand in the field.

Own the loss budget on site

### Why A measurement without an expected value is a number, not a verdict. The budget is the contract between design and reality. ### Steps 1. Carry the per-link budget sheet (or app) from the design package. 2. Compare every Tier 1 result to its own link budget, per wavelength. 3. Flag passes with <0.5 dB margin for inspection. 4. Investigate "too good" results as referencing errors. 5. Feed post-repair measurements back into the living budget document. ### Do Test at the worst service wavelength too · verify nearest/farthest ONT on PON · question any generic "3 dB rule". ### Don't Don't sign off against a number nobody calculated · don't spend the lifetime margin at build time.

Plan live-network work like surgery

### Why In shared segments (feeders, splitters, ring spans) one wrong fiber is hundreds of customers down and a reportable outage. ### Steps 1. Confirm the target fiber from records, then physically with a filtered identifier or test-port measurement — never by color alone. 2. Obtain the change window and notify stakeholders. 3. Use 1625/1650 nm filtered test gear on live PONs. 4. Stage materials for the shortest possible open time. 5. Verify service restoration and update records before leaving. ### Do Have a rollback plan · keep an incident bridge open on high-impact work · label what you touched. ### Don't No unscheduled opening of splitter trays · no tone-and-hope identification · no leaving before the ONTs are green.

Make safety visibly non-negotiable

### Why Every fiber-site rule maps to a real injury pattern: retinal exposure, embedded glass, solvent fires, vault atmospheres, traffic strikes. ### Steps 1. Brief before every task: hazards of this job, this location, today. 2. Meter-verify dark before handling; video-scope only. 3. Dark mat + sharps container in every kit; glasses on. 4. Atmosphere-test every vault before arcs or entry; permits for confined space and height. 5. Report near-misses the same day — they are the cheap lessons. ### Do Empower stop-work for anyone · audit kits monthly · keep SDS sheets with the chemicals. ### Don't No eating at the mat · no smoking near solvents · no "quick look" into any port, ever.
