FOI-S-001 rev 2.1

Optical Fiber Cable Installation

International references: ITU-T G.652/G.657; IEC 60794

1. Scope

This standard defines mandatory requirements for installing optical fiber cable in duct, direct-buried, aerial and indoor pathways on any project executed under institute certification.

2. Normative requirements

2.1 Pulling tension shall not exceed the manufacturer's rating and shall be applied to strength members through a pulling grip or breakaway swivel. Tension on jacket or fibers alone is prohibited.
2.2 Bend radius shall not fall below 20× cable OD under load or 10× at rest, unless the datasheet permits smaller.
2.3 Duct fill shall not exceed 40% area for a single cable pull unless engineered otherwise; innerduct or microduct assignment shall be recorded.
2.4 Service slack of ≥10 m shall be coiled and secured at every closure, cabinet and building entrance; ≥3 m at drop terminals.
2.5 Outdoor-rated cable may extend a maximum of 15 m inside a building before transition to listed cable at the entrance facility, or less where local code is stricter.
2.6 Direct-buried cable shall be installed at the depth required by local code with warning tape 300 mm above; armored construction or protective conduit is required under roads.
2.7 Every cable shall be labeled at both ends and at every intermediate appearance per FOI-S-006.

3. Acceptance criteria

Installation is accepted when: recorded pull tensions are within rating; visual inspection shows no jacket damage or radius violations; slack and sealing verified at all points; and post-installation Tier 1 test per FOI-S-002 passes.
