Connector Endface Inspection and Cleaning

International references: IEC 61300-3-35

1. Scope

Mandates the inspection-and-cleaning workflow for every optical connection made, tested or restored under institute certification.

2. Normative requirements

2.1 The sequence inspect → clean (if required) → re-inspect → connect is mandatory for both sides of every connection, including adapter interiors.
2.2 Inspection shall use a video microscope of ≥200× effective magnification with pass/fail analysis against IEC 61300-3-35 zone criteria for the connector type and polish.
2.3 Direct ocular inspection of any fiber that could carry power is prohibited.
2.4 Approved cleaning methods: dry click-type cleaner (first action); wet-to-dry with fiber-grade solvent and lint-free wipes for residues; port sticks for adapters. Compressed gas dusters shall not be used as a cleaning method.
2.5 A connector failing inspection after three cleaning cycles shall be replaced or re-terminated, and the event recorded.
2.6 Protective caps shall remain fitted on all unmated connectors and unused adapter ports at all times.

3. Acceptance criteria

A connection is compliant when its final inspection image passes zone criteria and is stored with the link record where the project requires image retention.
