Fusion Splicing and Closure Assembly

1. Scope

Requirements for fusion splicing workmanship, splice protection, and the assembly and sealing of splice closures.

2. Normative requirements

2.1 Field splices shall use fusion splicing; mechanical splices are permitted only for temporary restoration and shall be logged for replacement.
2.2 Individual splice loss shall not exceed 0.10 dB (machine estimate, confirmed by OTDR where Tier 2 applies); ribbon mass-fusion average ≤0.15 dB per fiber. Any splice above limit shall be remade before closure sealing.
2.3 Cleave angle shall not exceed 2°. Cleaver blades and splicer electrodes shall be maintained on a logged schedule; arc calibration performed at each day's start and after environment changes.
2.4 Heat-shrink protection sleeves shall be centered and fully recovered; fibers routed in trays at ≥30 mm bend radius with tube slack secured.
2.5 Closures shall be assembled per manufacturer procedure: seals torqued or shrunk to specification, desiccant fitted where specified, and pressure/flash testing performed where the design provides valves.
2.6 Tube-to-tray mapping and per-fiber destinations shall be recorded in the splice matrix per FOI-S-006 before the closure is sealed.

3. Acceptance criteria

A closure is accepted when all splice values meet 2.2, the closure passes its seal verification, and the splice matrix is complete and delivered.
