Optical Safety at Work

International references: IEC 60825-1/-2

1. Scope

Mandatory safety requirements for all personnel performing fiber work under institute certification.

2. Normative requirements

2.1 No person shall view a fiber end, connector or port directly. Verification of the dark state shall be by optical power meter; endface viewing shall use indirect video instruments only.
2.2 Every fiber shall be treated as energized until measured dark. On amplified or PON systems, work shall follow a written method-of-procedure including notification and, where applicable, automatic power reduction confirmation.
2.3 Cleaved fiber offcuts shall be collected immediately into a dedicated sharps container; work shall be performed over a contrasting mat; eating and drinking are prohibited at the fiber work position.
2.4 Solvent use follows fire precautions; no splicer arc shall be struck in a chamber or vault before atmosphere testing. Confined-space, work-at-height and traffic-control activities follow the site permit system without exception.
2.5 Incidents and near-misses involving optical exposure or glass injury shall be reported within 24 hours to the responsible supervisor.

3. Acceptance criteria

Site audits verify compliance by observation and records; two or more critical findings suspend certified status for the crew pending retraining.
